B4 — Meet, Greet & Fact-Finding
*Source map: M3 (discovery before presentation) + M2 (the read, applied)
+ Hopkins NEADS + Porcupine (library: old-school masters) + Elliott
earn-the-right sequencing (library: andy-elliott). Sitz time: ~35 min —
the hinge module of the Beginner course.*
Learning objectives
By the end of B4 you can:
- 1. Run the first five minutes: greeting, name, rapport — before any
vehicle talk.
- 2. Run NEADS in order — Now, Enjoy, Alter, Decision, Solve.
- 3. Use the Porcupine: answer a question with a question that qualifies.
- 4. Complete discovery in the fixed order: rapport → stated need → real
motivation → constraints (budget reality, timeline, trade situation).
- 5. Close discovery with the summary-back, and present NOTHING until the
buyer agrees with the summary.
Lesson script (narration)
[SLIDE: B4 title — "Meet, Greet & Fact-Finding" — handshake plate]
TRAINER: (Walls, spoken.) "The first five minutes decide whether
the next fifty happen. Here's the sequence — and it is a sequence. You
earn the right to ask before you ask anything that matters. No price
talk, no commitment talk, no credit talk until rapport is real and the
facts are found. A salesman who pitches in minute two is a salesman the
buyer stops hearing in minute three.
"Minute one: be a person. Your name, their name — used early and used
right. Something true and human: the drive over, the weather, the kids
climbing out of the car. Carnegie runs this part (B2): genuine interest,
no criticism, talk in terms of their interests. You're not warming them
up. You're finding out who you're helping."
[SLIDE: "NEADS — qualify before you present" — five-question graphic]
"Then fact-finding. The framework is Tom Hopkins' NEADS, and it runs
in order, every time:
- N — Now: What do you drive now?
- E — Enjoy: What do you like about it?
- A — Alter: What would you change about it? *(The pain that brought
them in lives here.)*
- D — Decision: Who besides you is part of deciding?
- S — Solve: What's the problem this vehicle has to solve?
"Run in order, NEADS surfaces the need, the dissatisfaction, the
authority, and the buying motive — before you present a single vehicle.
Underneath NEADS, the discovery order is fixed: rapport → what he says
he needs → what's underneath it → the constraints: **budget reality,
timeline, trade situation**. In that order, every time. Nothing gets
presented in this store until discovery is finished and said back."
[SLIDE: "The Porcupine" — question-for-question graphic]
"Buyers will fire questions at you mid-discovery — 'What's the payment
on that one?' 'Is it still available?' Don't dead-end them with a bare
answer, and never answer with a number you don't have (Wall 2). Use
Hopkins' Porcupine: answer the question with a question that
qualifies. 'Is the red one still here?' → 'It is — is red the color
you're set on, or is it the truck itself you like?' His answer tells you
whether you're looking at a preference, a condition, or a stall. The
Porcupine is also the correct default reply in a text thread — you'll
use it again in I2."
[SLIDE: "The gate: summary-back" — TRACK frame]
"Discovery ends at a gate, and the gate is a sentence. You summarize
the whole discovery back — need, motivation, budget, timeline, trade —
and the buyer confirms it. If he corrects you, good: that's discovery
working. You take the correction, you restate, and only a summary he
agrees with opens the door to showing a vehicle. You do not present over
a correction. Ever."
Word tracks (TRACK)
The greet:
"Good to meet you — I'm [your name], here at your store. What
brings you in today?"
Discovery transition:
"Before I show you anything — so I show you the right thing — tell me
what this vehicle has to do for you."
Porcupine (payment ask):
"Fair question — so I aim at the right vehicles: what monthly range
are you working to stay inside?"
Summary-back (the gate line):
"Let me say it back so I know I have it right. You need [stated need].
What's really driving it is [underlying motivation]. You're working
with [budget reality], on [timeline], and [trade situation]. Did I
miss anything?"

THE FIRST FIVE MINUTES + NEADS
- Greet: your name, their name, be a person first.
- Earn the right to ask. No price/credit talk early.
- Now — what do you drive? Enjoy — what do you like?
Alter — what would you change? Decision — who else decides?
Solve — what problem must this vehicle solve?
- Constraints, always: budget reality · timeline · trade.
- Porcupine: their question → your question.
- GATE: summary-back agreed → then, and only then, show a vehicle.
Floor drill — partner role-play
Partner B gets a buyer card with a stated need that is NOT the real need
(card shows both; the real one surfaces only under proper questioning).
Partner A runs the full sequence: greet → NEADS → Porcupine on B's
planted payment question → summary-back.
Trainer watches for: no presentation before the gate; the summary
names the REAL need, not just the stated one; Porcupine used instead of
an invented number; the read (B2) stated before the drill and adjusted
if the type shifted.
Practice self-check (ungraded)
- 1. Write out NEADS from memory, with one question per letter.
- 2. A buyer opens with, "Just tell me your best price on that SUV." Your
Porcupine reply?
- 3. Why does Decision come before Solve — what deal dies when you skip
it?
- 4. Your summary-back gets corrected: "No — the timeline's the thing,
I need it by Friday." Your next two moves?
Field assignment (same day)
On your next live up (manager-approved), run NEADS and write the
summary-back into the your CRM note before any presentation. Bring the
note to your trainer at day-end: need, motivation, budget, timeline,
trade — all five present, or the drill repeats tomorrow.
